Yes and no. I grew up in a very rural, very racist place, and while my fellow whites complained about “supporting urban minorities” (ridiculously, as you pointed out, but it was assumed by the whites that any time any Blacks left the Delta, they were just going up to Chicago to pick up their second welfare check), but they also felt threatened by the ever-growing numbers of nonwhites.
