But, possibilities of a global thermonuclear exchange aside, I’ve read an even scarier book: The Great Influenza by John Barry, wherein he describes the H1N1 influenza of 1918 that killed an estimated 50M worldwide…and would have killed far more if it hadn’t taken so long to be transmitted around the globe.
