Ukraine’s “Dildo of Consequences” Naval Drone Might Become Reality

Serving in the military is all about tradition, including conduct one would not expect of grown men and women. One of the oldest traditions is that of “crossing the line” ceremonies that we sailors have suffered (and then laughed about) since the time of the Phoenicians.

But guess what? There’s one that’s much older, probably as old as organized combat itself: using phallic symbols and humor in tongue-in-cheek threats usually (but not always) made toward a perceived enemy. While it’s true that in the past few generations, women have come into their own among combat units, this particular tradition is all about men being silly, stupid, puerile, and immature all at the same time. It’s a guy thing.

Exhibit A is from an ancient Roman fort named Vindolanda, near Hadrian’s Wall in what is now the United Kingdom:
