There’s only one caveat: it can only be made with fresh snow

From “Never Have I Ever” by Anya Wyers’ Mom Life (anyawyersauthor.ca)

Most parents know the feeling: it snowed last night, school’s been cancelled for the day, and your kids are driving you nuts. Yes, they’ve played outside, but now they just want to stay inside and they’re expecting you to whip up Something Really Special for them to eat.

Well, here’s something I’ve enjoyed since the 1960’s that is ridiculously simple: Snow Ice Cream. Like the name implies, snow is the main ingredient. The other is sweetened condensed milk. Any brand will do, but I’ve always used Eagle Brand:

All you need to do is to pile up a bunch of fresh, clean snow into a large pot, pour the can of sweetened condensed milk on top, and mix. It will be messy — the snow will go all over the place, so younger kids might enjoy doing it on principle — but once it’s done, a good serving will look somewhat like this:

I know, I know, the picture doesn’t exactly look appetizing, but I promise you that not only is it delicious, but the texture it has in your mouth is better than any store-bought ice cream (and I say that as someone who dearly loves ice cream). Trust me on this: your kids will love it.
