The problem with that line of thought is that it gives license to do whatever a particular nation believes is a core part of its culture.

At one time segregation was absolutely a core part of American culture (and an argument could be made that to an extent it remains so today). That doesn't make it right...and it doesn't mean that America didn't need to change its culture.

If the French believe that *deliberately* doing what is highly insulting to those of a particular religion is okay because that's the way of French culture, then they need to change it.
