Retired Navy and one-time programmer here. I didn't know about either incident, but I'm not surprised at all. I remember when the Millennium was approaching, and I was working in Security on board the USS Abraham Lincoln. We found out our admin program (which we used to track everything and provide reports to the command) was one of the only systems on board that was not Y2K-compatible, but we didn't have time to order one that was.
So I had to write just such a program, even though I was also on emergency leave overseas at the time. By the time I returned in the second week of January, I'd written one that was (even though it was written in barf-quality MS Access) more user-friendly, more reliable, and more capable than the original program (named S.T.A.R.S) had been, and I was awarded a Navy Achievement Medal for it.
And just thinking about it gives me a smile.
