It’s almost as if the universe is an enormous firework, one of the mortars that explodes in a vast globe of sparkles. Just as the explosive powder provides the acceleration for the special-effects particles, but only up to a point (and not to the same degree in every direction), dark energy is supplying the acceleration of our universe…but only up to a point, and not to the same degree in every direction.
