I suggest you learn a little more history, if that's your argument. Here's one that will help, from a group I normally strongly oppose:

https://www.libertarianism.org/columns/fear-standing-armies-root-second-amendment

The pertinent paragraph therein:

"Many of the newly formed states’ bills of rights contained articles dealing with the problems of standing armies, militias, and the right to possess arms. Virginia’s Bill of Rights contained all of these issues in one article reading “that a well‐regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, trained to arms, is the proper, natural and safe defence of a free state; that standing armies, in times of peace, should be avoided, as dangerous to liberty; and that in all cases military power should be under strict subordination to, and governed by the civil power.” Both the Federalists and Anti‐Federalists agreed that citizen militias were the guarantors of liberty. The concept of militias as an essential institution to the flourishing of liberty was a widely held belief during the revolutionary period."

Secondly, you stated I "just want firearms to go away." That, sir, is an *assumption*, and a wrong one. Remember, I grew up further out in the boonies than most, and out there, owning firearms is not a matter of politics, but of practicality e.g. hunting, eliminating varmints, and protection since the closest police were 20-30 mins. away at best. But nobody, absolutely nobody saw the need for something like an AR-15.

So please stop making assumptions - they often turn out to be wrong, like the one you just made.

Lastly, you really wanna protect the kids? There's only ONE reason why America's the ONLY nation on the whole damn planet where "active shooter" drills for elementary school kids are a fact of life. NO OTHER NATION needs to do so. Why? Because NO OTHER NATION has more guns than people among their civilian populace.

All other 'reasons' the "gun-rights" crowd claims are just excuses and nothing more. Make something easier to do, and more people will do it, even if it's wrong or evil. Make it easier to kill, and more people will kill. It really is as simple as that.
