I see no reason to disagree - indeed, I lean more towards Jose Ortega y Gasset, for since the turn of the century we have found that not only mammals, but birds, fish, insects, trees, plants, and even a particular Parisian mold seem to be aware. Indeed, just yesterday there was a headline about a study claiming that bumblebees appear to have fun - thus Gasset's "I live, therefore I think."

Sadly (for me), this realization implies that fields of grain are every bit as cruel to each plant as are our industrialized meat production facilities are to livestock. It means we are all "librevores" - we eat not just meat or plants, but life itself.

My apologies for the rather depressing reply - it's just too early in the morning and I haven't had my coffee yet....
