I really enjoyed your article. I’d never understood the privilege I had until I married someone who had known what real hunger and poverty are like. To be sure, as an Asian, she does not face anything like the degree of prejudice and rejection that you do, but there’s still been quite a few times when people wouldn’t listen to her until I stepped in and spoke up.
But the more important lesson I learned from her was the kind of toughness and adaptability you describe, the determination it takes to make it through the kind of tough times most like me never see. In other words, like you, she doesn’t do self-pity.
Self-pity is poison, all the more when it’s consumed on a daily basis by half the population of an entire nation.
