I love your article and have long held you in high regard, but your article here would hold true if and only if it were only a matter of our national partisan divide. Up through the administration of George W. Bush, your observation would have been accurate, but I believe that you did not address the 800-lb. elephant in the room: race.
In 2006, the Republicans in Congress voted almost in lockstep to reauthorize the Voting Rights Act. Then came the election of the first black man to the White House, combined with the news that America would be a majority-minority nation in a few decades…and when SCOTUS gutted the Voting Rights Act In 2013, the GOP cheered, again almost in lockstep.
The partisan divide in America is no longer between liberal and conservative, but between white and every other race.
