I had that experience in my (26 years-and-counting) marriage to an Asian woman. Whenever I went to visit my family back in the MS Delta, the racism (including among all whites I knew there, and especially among all my family members there) was so thick, so pervasive, and informed every word and action between the whites and blacks there (and helped me to realize just how racist I had once been). My wife and our children couldn’t help but see it for themselves, either.

And now that all my birth family in MS has passed away, I’ll never go there again. I miss the land, the weather, and oh, man, do I miss the food…but the racism is too much, especially given that like myself so long ago, almost every white there sincerely believes he or she isn’t racist. But they are, every one.
