How can one answer? How does one hold a sensible discussion with someone who makes the choice to listen only to right-wing media sources?

Before he passed, I tried for years to get through to my older brother, but there was just no I stopped trying. He never changed. He remained just as right-wing, just as racist until the day he died.

Those of us in this kind of situation have to make up our own minds, and every situation, every individual will be different. But what I do now is interact with such people when I have to. I don't engage in political discussions, for I remember how I was once a strong conservative. It was no argument that changed my mind, my way of thinking, but it was my own experiences that forced me to change.

Another way to look at it is like this: religions are very rarely weakened, but instead normally *strengthened* by persecution. I see the current right-wing insanity in much the same light: the more I (even politely) pressure them to change, the more they tell themselves they are being persecuted, and thus edified in their beliefs.

And it's only when they simply go too far - like this past Wednesday - that many of them will wake up and smell the corruption, the deception, and the evil.

We can't change them. They must change themselves. Just like with so many alcoholics, they have to hit rock bottom before they can begin to recover.

Retired Navy. Inveterate contrarian. If I haven’t done it, I’ve usually done something close.
