Everything you say is quite true. Problem is, we don’t know what they think. Sure, they might be less powerful than humanity, or they might be more powerful and peaceful…but they also could very well have an ethos, a cultural drive that demands they destroy any other civilizations they meet. Or they may subscribe to their own version of Dark Forest theory. We simply don’t know.

But we do know this: it’s humanity’s existence that’s being gambled on your decision.

One more thing: I’m a peacenik. I really am. I’ve thrown one punch since 1976. I grew up around firearms and spend two decades in the Navy, so I’m certainly not afraid of firearms…but I don’t own any. I don’t see the need. Every military adventure we’ve had overseas since WWII (except for the Korean War and Desert Storm) were IMO war crimes. Like I said, I’m a peacenik.

What I was trying to do with my article was to give a possible reason why we haven’t detected (or been contacted by) E.T. yet…and why we shouldn’t worry about wars based on Dark Forest theory.

But that doesn’t mean that we should ignore the implications of Dark Forest theory, nor does it mean that it would be wise to approach another spacefaring species with open arms.
