Every once in a while one reads a profound statement that sets off the proverbial light bulb over one’s head. This is one such statement. I’ve encountered such people several times over the years, and it bothered me greatly that they never seemed to realize the harm their too-dogmatic approach did to their otherwise-sincere desire for advocacy. Your succinct definition put into words what I’d been feeling during those discussions. Unfortunately, as right as you are, in my experience, such people cannot be changed by pointing this out to them; instead, through the lens of their own dogma, they would see such constructive criticism as a direct attack, an attempt to impugn their character…and I see no solution other than to walk away from them.
