You call it a Tuesday.
East Asia is the world’s most active incubator of viruses deadly to humans, and for good reason: overpopulation, livestock production with limited sanitation, lack of refrigeration, and a (slowly diminishing) cultural reliance on traditional medicine. Remember the SARS epidemic back in 2002? That was also from a coronavirus that mutated in China. Avian influenzae are also a great concern, given that since the H7N9 variant was first identified in 2013, there have been no fewer than five epidemics of that strain in mainland China.
This is why most who pay attention to emerging viruses are very hesitant to buy into conspiracy theories about Chinese scientists metaphorically gathered around a cauldron chanting “Double, double, toil and trouble, viruses grow and cauldron bubble.” Instead, in the virology and epidemiology communities, it would probably be accurate to say the two most highly-experienced and -trusted nations are America and China.
