Actually, even though I grew up reading most of the greats of the golden age of science fiction (e.g. Asimov, Heinlein, et al), I never read anything by Clarke.

It would be nice for us to have a space elevator, but - unless we use an asteroid with automatic mining and factories - I don't think any nation on Earth will be willing to foot the bill. But one can always hope :)
